Stanford, Calif. - The top-ranked Arizona Wildcats rallied for six runs in the top of the fifth inning to beat the No. 15 Stanford softball team 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at Smith Family Stadium on Senior Day. The Cardinal could only manage one hit on the day to fall to 36-23 overall and 5-13 in the Pac-10 Conference, while the Wildcats improve to 47-4 and 16-1 in the league.
Both pitchers had perfect games through the first three innings, until Stanford starter Dana Sorensen (San Diego, CA) walked Courtney Fossatti for the first base runner of the contest in the top of the fourth. Following a Wendy Allen bunt and an error by the Cardinal infield, Sorensen retired the next three batters (two on strikeouts) to end the threat.
Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, CA) broke up Arizona's Alicia Hollowell's no-hitter in the fourth, recording the game's first hit with two outs but was left stranded on first.
Following a Jackie Coburn walk in the fifth, Crystal Farley's bunt single was the first hit of the game for the Wildcats. Sorensen walked Allyson Von Liechtenstein to load the bases and Fossatti's hit went off Elizabeth Bendig's (Santa Ana, CA) glove to score Coburn at third. Allen kept the rally going with an RBI single and Von Liechtenstein scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 Arizona. The Wildcats were not done as Mackenzie Vandergeest took a Sorensen pitch over the wall for a 6-0 Arizona lead.
Tori Nyberg (Belmont, CA) came in to pitch for Sorensen in the sixth, retiring Arizona in order to end the game.
Sorensen got the loss for Stanford to fall to 17-10. In five innings she fanned 10 Wildcat batters, scattered three hits and surrendered three earned runs. Hollowell moves to 32-3 on the year for Arizona, going the distance and finishing with 11 strikeouts and allowed just one hit.
Stanford will be in action on Tuesday night for a make up doubleheader with San Jose State. The contest is set to begin at 5 p.m., marking the Cardinal's final home game in 2003.
