Berkeley, Calif. - Bamidele Oluwalana's unassisted goal just before halftime at 44:49 lifted Old Dominion (3-0) to a 1-0 victory over #6 Stanford (1-1) in the second game of the Cal Adidas Legacy Classic for both teams at Edwards Stadium on Sunday. The win lifted the Monarchs to the tournament title. Old Dominion also defeated #19 California on the first day of the tournament last Friday.
Oluwalana's shot was actually touched by Stanford goalkeeper Robby Fulton but deflected off Cardinal defender James Twellman and into the net.
"Old Dominion played defense at a very high level today and they were able to bang in the game's only goal," said Stanford head coach Bret Simon. "We made a great effort but were just not able to score on their defense."
Old Dominion held a slim 9-5 advantage in shots for the game, including a 6-0 margin in the first half. Stanford outshot the Monarchs after the break, 5-3, and had one serious chance thwarted in the waning moments of the contests when Chad Marshall's header got by Old Dominion goalkeeper Samuel Cameron and was a headed toward the goal before a defender knocked the potential game-winning shot away.
Cameron picked up his third consecutive victory, while Fulton suffered the loss. Both goalkeepers posted three saves.
Stanford had four corner kicks, while the Monarchs attempted two.
Fulton, Abe Geiger and Marshall were selected to the All-Tournament team.
"This tournament was a good early season test for our young team," added Simon about his Cardinal that splits its two games in the event."
Three yellow cards were given in the contest, two to Old Dominion's Josh Hill (46:32) and Kevon Harris (90:00) as well as one to Stanford's Mike Wilson (73:30).
Stanford lost to Old Dominion for the third straight meeting between the clubs and fell to 1-3 all-time versus the Monarchs. The loss marks the first time Stanford has dropped one of its first two games of the season since 1996.
Stanford will next be in action at the Brown Tournament (Friday, September 12; Sunday, September 14). The Cardinal opens the event versus host Brown on Friday (7:30 pm, ET) before playing Yale on Sunday (11:00 am, ET).
