Tulsa, Okla. - Stanford (1-4-0) suffered a 2-0 loss to host and No. 20 Tulsa (6-1-0) in the opening round of the Microtel Inn & Suites/Golden Hurricane Classic on Thursday evening at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Cardinal after opening the season with a victory. Tulsa won its third in a row and its second straight versus the Cardinal dating back to last season.
Ryan Pore and Kyle Brown both picked up a goal and an assist for the Hurricanes.
Pore scored the game's first goal at 35:07 when he converted a three-yard shot by Cardinal goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen. Scott Kincaid set up the goal by playing a ball to Brown, who crossed the ball to Pore for the score.
Brown gave the Hurricanes an insurance goal in the second half at 56:01 when he took a pass from Pore 10 yards from the goal in the middle of the penalty box and nailed a shot to the top shelf of the net. Pore and Bryan Rudd were both credited with an assist on the goal. Rudd beat a Stanford defender to the right side of the field and a slid a pass to Poor before he moved the ball on to Brown.
"We played with a lot of heart but made a couple of tactical mistakes that Tulsa did a great job capitalizing on," said Stanford head coach Bret Simon. "Overall, I thought we played better against a very good team. We're close to playing well enough to be able to get some good wins on the board."
Tulsa goalkeeper Terry Boss (6-1) picked up the victory and recorded his third shutout of the season. Kartunen (0-2) took the loss and also had five saves.
Both teams attempted eight shots, while Stanford had two corner kicks to one for Tulsa.
Pore and Stanford's Matt Janusztied for a game-high three shots each.
Stanford's 1-4 record is its worst after five games since the 1980 squad started with the same mark.
Stanford will conclude the tournament on Friday (5 pm, CT) versus No. 8 SMU (5-1), a 2-0 winner over Denver in an opening round game on Thursday. The Cardinal will make its 2003 home debut by hosting the Stanford/Nike Invitational presented by the Creekside Inn on September 26-28. Stanford will host Fairleigh Dickinson in its opening game on Friday, September 26 (7:30 pm) before playing UC Irvine in the finale of the tournament on Sunday, September 28 (2:30 pm).
