Tulsa, Okla. - Stanford (1-4-1) ended a season-opening six-game road trip by playing No. 8 SMU (5-1-1) to a 0-0 double overtime tie on the second day of the Microtel Inn & Suites/Golden Hurricane Classic on Thursday evening at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium. The tie snapped Stanford's four-game losing skid and SMU's three-game win streak. Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen recorded a career-high 14 saves and his first collegiate shutout.
The last time Stanford played a 0-0 tie was at Fresno State on September 20, 2002.
SMU's Kellan Zindel took a game-high 10 shots, while Chad Marshall's three shots led the Cardinal. The Mustangs outshot Stanford, 31-7, and held a 14-8 advantage in corner kicks.Stanford's 1-4-1 record equals its worst start since 1994 when the team began the season with the same mark.
SMU's tie gave the Mustangs a 1-0-1 mark in the two-game tournament and earned the Mustangs the tournament title, while Stanford finished fourth in the tournament with an 0-1-1 record. Host and No. 20 Tulsa had an opportunity to win the tournament but was upset by Denver, 3-2, on Friday. The Hurricanes (1-1-0 in the tournament) still finished second thanks to a goal differential tiebreaker, while Denver was third in the tournament with a 1-1-0 mark.Kartunen and Marshall represented Stanford on the All-Tournament team.
Stanford will make its 2003 home debut by hosting the Stanford/Nike Invitational presented by the Creekside Inn on September 26-28. Stanford will host Fairleigh Dickinson in its opening game on Friday, September 26 (7:30 pm) before playing UC Irvine in the finale of the tournament on Sunday, September 28 (2:30 pm).
