SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Redshirt sophomore setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, CA) recorded 58 assists to lead Stanford to a 30-32, 30-22, 30-22, 30-27 win over Pacific in the consolation semifinals of the E-Bar Invite on Saturday morning at UC Santa Barbara.
The win moves Stanford (2-1) into the fifth place match of the E-Bar Invite against Long Beach State (3-1) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Cardinal opened the eight-team tournament with a 3-1 loss to UC Irvine on Friday night.
Senior opposite Curt Toppel (Pacific Palisades, CA) led the Cardinal with 16 kills, while senior middle blocker Paul Bocage (Princeton, NJ) and sophomore middle blocker Craig Buell (Solana Beach, CA) chipped in 13 kills apiece. Sophomore libero David Vogel (Poway, CA) added a team-high 16 digs.
This was the third match of the year between the Cardinal and the Tigers (1-2), who split a pair of matches at the Husky Dino Cup in October. Pacific won 3-0 in preliminary round action before the Cardinal bounced back to post a 3-2 win in the gold medal match. Neither of those October matches will count in the 2003 team records for the respective squads.
