Stanford, Ca - Peter Varellas scored three goals, including two in the second period, to lead second-ranked Stanford to a 7-4 victory over seventh-ranked UCLA during first day action on Saturday at the NorCal Water Polo Tournament at the Avery Aquatic Center.
After being deadlocked at 1-1 after one period and down 2-1 early in the second period, the Cardinal scored three times to take a 4-2 halftime lead. The Bruins pulled to within one goal (5-4) with 1:08 in the third period on a goal by Peter Belden, but fourth period goals by Thomas Hopkins at 4:20 and Varellas at 2:20 pushed the Cardinal to a comfortable lead.
Earlier in the day, Stanford scored the game's first 12 goals and went on to easily defeat Santa Clara, 16-2. Tony Azevedo scored three of Stanford's seven goals in the first period. Two of Stanford's seven first period goals were scored by Hopkins, who added another goal in the second period.
Stanford will continue play on Sunday (11:30 a.m.) with a semifinal championship game against third-ranked Pepperdine. In the other semifinal game (10:20 a.m.), top-ranked USC faces #4 California.

Bitter's goal gave the Anteaters a 7-5 lead, but the Lions cut the margin to one goal at 5:20 of the fourth period by Scott Smith. UC Irvine's biggest margin was a 6-3 advantage at 3:57 of the third period.
