Tempe, Ariz. - Senior middle blocker Jennifer Harvey had nine kills and five blocks to lead the fourth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Arizona State tonight in Tempe, Arizona. Game scores were 30-24, 30-22, 30-22.
The Cardinal improve to 11-2 overall, 5-0 in Pac-10 play while the Sun Devils fall to 6-7, 1-3 in league action. Stanford has now won its last five matches and has only dropped one game during that streak.
With game one tied at six-all, the Cardinal strung together four points to surge ahead 10-6 on a service ace by Jennifer Hucke that forced an ASU timeout. Stanford went on a five-point run to go up 15-7 after a kill by Kristin Richards. The Sun Devils would take their final timeout trailing 10-19 after an ASU ball-handling error. With the Cardinal leading 21-11, Arizona State went on a four-point run to close the gap to six points as Stanford took their first timeout. A dump by setter Katie Goldhahn gave the Cardinal a 24-17 as Stanford pulled away. An ASU hitting error gave SU game point at 29-23 while a Sun Devil service error closed out the game, 30-24.
Three consecutive Stanford blocks put the Cardinal up 6-3 to open game two. Another Jennifer Hucke service ace gave SU the 10-6 advantage while a Sun Devil service error made the score 15-10 Stanford heading into the media timeout. Hucke's third service ace of the match gave the Cardinal the 20-12 lead. Three consecutive ASU points closed the gap to 16-21 as Stanford called their first timeout. The Sun Devils would call their first timeout after a service error put the Cardinal up 24-17 and call their second after a Sara McGee kill at 28-22. An ASU hitting error would give Stanford game point at 29-22 while a block solo by Kristin Richards closed out the game 30-22 to put the Cardinal up two games to none in the match.
A kill by Ogonna Nnamani put Stanford up 6-2 to open game three and force an ASU timeout. A block solo by Nnamani gave the Cardinal the 13-7 advantage and another Nnamani kill forced the final Sun Devils timeout at 17-9. But ASU would slowly close the gap pulling to within five points trailing 15-20 but Stanford opened the game back up to an eight-point advantage after an ASU service error at 25-17. A Cardinal block gave Stanford game point at 29-21 while Sara McGee closed out the match with a kill at 30-22.
Ogonna Nnamani led Stanford with 10 kills on the night while adding four blocks. Libero Courtney Schultz had a team-leading 10 digs while Jennifer Hucke notched three service aces.
ASU was led by Natalie Harris' match-high 16 kills and Courtney Blocher's 13 digs.
Stanford will travel to Tucson tomorrow to take on the Arizona Wildcats at 7 p.m. MT in continued conference action.
