Stanford, Ca - The third-ranked Stanford men's water polo team exploded for five goals in the first period, and then held on to defeat #4 UCLA in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Saturday at the Avery Aquatic Center.
Stanford scored the game's first three goals. Greg Crum scored at 5:30 followed by Tony Azevedo's goal at 4:17 and the third score at 3:19 by Peter Varellas. UCLA broke into the scoring column at 2:58 on a extra-man goal by Ted Peck. Stanford's Thomas Hopkins scored at 1:58 followed by a goal with ten seconds left in the first period by Sam Tyre.
Stanford's sixth goal came at 3:17 by Matt Moser.
The victory upped Stanford's record to 13-3 overall and 2-1 in the MPSF. UCLA's six-game winning streak was broken. The Bruins fall to 13-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Sunday at noon, Stanford host fifth-ranked Pepperdine.
