Top-Ranked Cardinal Men & Women Cruise To Victory at Pac-10 Championships

Nov. 1, 2003

Pullman, Wa - Total Domination!!!

For the eighth straight year, the top-ranked Stanford women's cross country team captured first place at the Pac-10 Championships, this time on Saturday (Nov. 1) at the Washington State Golf course over 6,000 meters. The Cardinal women tallied 22 points to easily beat eight other conference schools including runnerup Arizona State with 78 points.

For the second straight year, Sara Bei won the conference title by winning in a time of 21:12.10 over 6,000 meters. Stanford's Alicia Craig was second (21:12.20) while freshman Arianna Lambie placed third (21:21.40). Five Stanford runners placed in the Top 10.

The Cardinal men, also top-ranked in the country, cruised to an easy team conference victory for the fourth straight season. Stanford tallied 23 points to outdistance second place Oregon with 91. Ian Dobson became the fourth straight conference winner from Stanford with a time of 24:33.90 over 8,000 meters. Two-time defending champion Grant Robison finished second (24:35.50) while Donald Sage placed fourth (24:44.90). Five Cardinal runners placed in the Top-9.

"The cold was what I was more worried about," said Dobson, "but it turned out to be a nice day. We knew we weren't going to be prepared for the cold, but there's really nothing to do but tough it out."

Cardinal head men's coach Andrew Gerard was pleased with Dobson's performance. "Ian's always in there. He hasn't maybe had some of the accolades that some of the other guys have, with NCAA titles, but it's great to have him win. He's been really running very well."

Cardinal head women's coach Dena Evans was also pleased with the Cardinal team and the 1-2 finish for Bei and Craig. "We always put the team first and I think the girls did a really good job of sharing the positive things that happened to the team. I'm glad they were able to enjoy the victory together."
