IRVINE, Calif. --- Peter Varellas, Tony Azevedo and ThomasHopkins each scored three goals to lead the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal to a 12-6 win over UCIrvine in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Saturday at the AnteaterAquatics Complex.
Stanford took a 4-2 lead into the intermission, highlighted by two goals byAzevedo. The Anteaters cut the lead to one on a goal by Phil Garciain the third period, but Stanford answered back with five straight tallies before UCI wouldrecord another goal (9-4). Varellas' third goal would give the Cardinal a10-5 lead into the fourth period.
UCI's Tim Hutten and Nate White came up with consecutive goals in thefourth quarter, but Stanford's Tyler Drake capped the scoring with 57seconds remaining as the Cardinal improved to 17-3 overall (6-1 MPSF).
Dan Noon led UCI with three goals while Garcia scored twice onpower plays.
Stanford's Chad Taylor had two saves in the win. UCI goalie Joe Wynne recorded eight saves as the Anteaters fell to 12-14 overall and 3-5 in conference action.
Stanford travels to Long Beach State on Sunday. Game time is noon. The Cardinal returns home on Saturday, Nov. 22, against California.
