Long Beach, Ca. - The second-ranked Stanford men's water polo team jumped out to a 6-0 first period lead and never looked back as the Cardinal scored a 12-8 victory over eighth-ranked Long Beach State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Sunday.

Long Beach State slowly crept back into the game with three goals in the second period and two more in the third period to close the gap to 8-5. But Cardinal All-American Tony Azevedo would answer with two goals, one at 1:49 on a breakaway, before scoring again with 19 seconds left to put the game away at 10-5.

Azevedo led Stanford scorers with four goals (two in the first period) while Mike Derse added three. Two of Derse's goals came in the six-goal first period.

Stanford returns home on Nov. 22 (10 a.m.) to face Bay Area rival California.
