LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - Seventh-ranked Stanford finished tied for fifth at the 16-team USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Men's Tennis Championship after a 4-2 quarterfinal playoff victory over 18th-ranked Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon at the Louisville Tennis Center.
Stanford, which is now 6-2 on the season, defeated ninth-ranked Kentucky 4-0 in the first round on Thursday and fell to third-ranker Baylor 4-0 in the quarterfinals on Friday.
After Texas A&M (6-5) won the doubles point, Stanford won the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles matches to take a 3-1 lead. Fiftieth-ranked freshman James Pade (Woodside, CA) prevailed 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 and 52nd-ranked sophomore Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA) posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 6 to give Stanford a commanding lead. Senior Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY), who is ranked 46th in the country, clinched the win with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over 83rd-ranked Ante Matijevic at No. 3.
The Cardinal returns home for a Tuesday non-conference match against unranked Utah at 1:30 p.m. at the Taube Tennis Center before traveling to La Jolla, California for the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship next Friday-Sunday (Feb. 28-March 2).
