Men's Crew Starts Season with Success

March 22, 2003

Redwood Shores, Calif. - The Cardinal began the 2003 Spring racing season with a clean sweep of Sacramento State, USC and Santa Clara. In worsening conditions, the Cardinal continued to take advantage of the spirited competition from the visiting crews.

Director of Rowing and Men's Head Coach Craig Amerkhanian remarked: "We were excited to duel with the Sacramento State Varsity for our first race. Sam Sweitzer coached crews are infamous for their tenacity. It will be interesting to chart their progression of speed through the season." The high pace of the racing pushed the crews to the 1000 before the Cardinal moved to their next gear to claim victory.

Round two of the Cardinal match-ups featured a vastly improved University of Southern California squad under new Head Coach Gene Kininmonth. Coach Amerkhanian noted: "Gene clearly has raised the USC Men's program to a new, higher level. He is doing a great job with a young Trojan team that has made notable improvements in intensity, focus and drive." With a quick turnaround from their first race of the day, the Varsity 8+ docked the boat, stretched and raced again with the eager USC squad. The Cardinal asserted their control of the racing early and earned first place.

As the races progressed, the wind turned from a non-factor into a rugged headwind. In these challenging conditions, the Cardinal's final matchup of the day featured the Santa Clara Broncos. The Varsity 8+ was able to power through the Broncos' spirited start to close out the series of races with a win. Amekhanian concluded with: "Coach Jay Farwell always brings a classy, dedicated group of student athletes to compete in the Spring. We wish the best for Jay and the Broncs during their racing season."

On March 29 and 30, the Cardinal will host the inaugural Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic at Redwood Shores. Racing begins at 9 AM on Saturday and concludes at 5PM. On Sunday, the racing will also begin at 9 AM and conclude at 11:00 AM with a brief awards ceremony to follow at 11:30 AM.
