OJAI, Calif. - Senior David Martin (Tulsa, OK) advanced to the semifinals of the Pacific-10 Conference Men's Tennis Championship on Friday morning at Libbey Park.
The Pac-10 Individual Championships continue on Saturday with the singles semifinals at 9:30 a.m. and the doubles semifinals at 2:00 p.m. Consolation bracket action will also take place on Saturday.
In singles, the 12th-ranked Martin defeated 50th-ranked Chris Lam of UCLA 7-5, 6-3 to improve to 31-8 on the season. Martin has won eight of his last nine matches, and is now 14-8 against ranked opponents this season. The Cardinal senior will face 18th-ranked Alex Vlaski of Washington in Saturday's semifinals. This will be the first meeting of the season between Martin and Vlaski.
Also in championship singles action, Cardinal senior Scott Lipsky (Merrick, NY) dropped a 6-2, 6-0 quarterfinal decision to Marcin Matkowski of UCLA.
In the invitational singles flight, sophomore Phil Sheng (Thousand Oaks, CA) was eliminated in the Friday morning's quarterfinals.
In the Pac-10 Doubles Championship, freshmen James Pade (Woodside, CA) won a pair of matches on Friday afternoon to reach the semifinals. Corkery and Pade beat Christoph Palmanshofer and Peter Scharler of Washington in the first round and Ryan McBride and Pim Van Mele of Arizona State in the quarterfinals. Corkery and Pade's semifinals opponents will be Whi Kim and Paul Warkentin of Arizona.
Stanford's other doubles entrant in the Pac-10 Championship --- seniors Lipsky and Martin --- won their first round match before being eliminated in the quarterfinals.
In the doubles invitational, the Cardinal's Carter Morris (Washington , D.C.) and Sam Warburg (Sacramento, CA) reached Saturday's semifinals by posting a victory on Friday afternoon. Morris and Warburg will take on Chris Lam and Chris Surapol of UCLA in the semis.
