The Stanford Women's Sailors finished 5th overall in their home waterat this year's Pacific Coast Championship, April 26-27. The CardinalTeam won the event by over 20 points last year, so the 5th placefinish is especially difficult this year. U Hawaii's Wahinedominated the event, earning the top position and the first PacificCoast berth to the National Championships to be held in Detroit inJune.
The real fight was for second place (and the second berth toNationals). Two disqualifications put USC out of the running onSaturday, which left a fierce battle between Cal, UC Santa Barbara,UC Irvine and Stanford for second place. In one of the tightestbattles in years, the regatta was a three-way tie between Cal, UCSBand UCI going into the last two races. In building breeze, UCI'sLauren Maxam and Emily Hemberger pulled a 3,1 to earn 2nd placeoverall and the berth to Nationals.
The bright spot of the weekend was the Cardinal B-Division, AshleyFrush and crew Shadi Mehraein sailed half the regatta while LizRountree and crew Veronica Sudekum sailed most of Sunday. The combosproved powerful, earning the Cardinal 3rd in B-Division. TheA-Division teams of Jen Porter and crew Jessie Duncan and Liz Shearerand crew Jenais Zarlin earned 6th in A-Division.

The coed team leaves Thursday for their qualifiers for both TeamRacing and Fleet Racing Nationals. The regatta will be hosted by USCin Long Beach, California. The team finished 2nd last year.
