Indianapolis, Ind. - The 2003 NCAA Rowing Championships started in successful fashion, despite the afternoon repechages being moved up due to weather that was set to enter the Indianapolis area. Brown and Division II UC-Davis began defense of their 2002 titles, while six schools started the trek for the Division III title.
The University of Michigan, Stanford University, the University of Virginia, Princeton University, Harvard University, Brown University, the University of California (Berkeley), the University of Southern California, the University of Washington, the University of Texas, Yale and Ohio State all advanced to the Division I semifinals of the Varsity Eight event. The semifinals will take place Saturday.
The opening race of the 2003 NCAA Rowing Championships was exciting as the University of Michigan finished first in 6:40.50, eight tenths of a second ahead of Stanford (6:41.30). Virginia finished third in 6:42.60. All three teams automatically advanced to the semifinal race.
The second heat of the Eights competition was close as well with Princeton University finishing on top, clocking a 6:39.50, and Harvard rowing in second at 6:41.00. The University of Southern California clocked a 6:41.90 to place third in the heat.
Brown University, who posted the fastest Varsity Eight time of the day, the University of California at Berkeley and the defending National Champions, the University of Washington, took the first three spots in the third heat of the morning, finishing in 6:39.27, 6:42.06 and 6:42.09, respectively.
The University of Texas, Yale and Ohio State all qualify for the semifinals after clinching the top three spots in Friday afternoon's repechage. Texas was victorious in a time of 7:09.29, Yale finished second in 7:09.43 and Ohio State crossed the finish line in 7:11.46.
In the Division I Second Varsity Eights event, Brown University and the University of California at Berkeley earned the top spots in its heats, advancing to the finals. On Saturday, Harvard, Princeton, Virginia, Washington State and Michigan State will race against each other in the first repechage race, while Michigan, Yale, Ohio State, Washington and Stanford will compete against each other in the second repechage. The top two finishers in each repechage will join Brown and California in the finals.
In the Division I Fours event, the University of California at Berkeley and Brown University will advance to the finals after placing first in their heats. California finished first in 7:35.39, followed by Virginia, Washington, Harvard, Washington State and Stanford, respectively. Brown rowed in at 7:31.27 past Michigan, Ohio State, Yale, Princeton and Michigan State, respectively. The repechages of the Fours competition will take place on Saturday, with the top two finishers in each rep advancing to Sunday's final.
In the Division II Eights competition, Mercyhurst College, the University of California at Davis and Western Washington University all advanced to the finals, which will take place Sunday beginning at 10:45 a.m. Rollins College, Humboldt State and Florida Institute of Technology advance to Saturday's repechage, where the top finisher will advance to the final.
Both Mercyhurst College and the University of California, Davis will also be competing in the Division II Fours finals on Sunday. Western Washington University and Florida Institute of Technology will be racing in Saturday's repechage for the remaining spot in the final.
Heat winners from University of Puget Sound-I and Colby College-I, will be joined by Coast Guard, Ithaca-I, Wellesley-I and Trinity-I from the repechages, in Saturday's final. Wellesley, Trinity-II, Colby College-II, Puget Sound-II, Ithaca-II and Coast Guard-II will all proceed to the Petite Finals.
