Stanford Sailors earn 8th at Nationals, B-Division garners 3rd

June 10, 2003

Detroit, Michigan - The Stanford Coed Sailors improved one position on last year's North American Championship in Hawaii. The Cardinal Coeds earned 8th overall of 18 teams at today's conclusion of the 2003 Intercollegiate Sailing Association's North American Championship. The event was dominated by Harvard University, who took first place with a convincing 69-point lead over second place University of Hawaii. In third, last year's champion St. Mary's College of Maryland.

The high point for the Cardinal sailors was earning 3rd overall in the competitive B-Division. Dave Phillips '04 and Sonja Bebber '04 started out with a solid set of finishes in Sunday's light air, putting them second behind Harvard's Cardwell Potts/Michelle Yu. In Monday's windy conditions, Stanford's Brian Haines '06 and Taylor Clark '04 took over the B-Division to keep the Cardinal in 2nd. With the front past, and the wind dying off, Phillips and Bebber took the water for Tuesday's 4 remaining races. They were, however, unable to stave off a last minute attack from U Hawaii's Pasquali/Hitchcock team, who managed to eek into 2nd, leaving the Stanford team in 3rd. "I'm really pleased with the teamwork the B-division demonstrated," commented Head Coach Jay Kehoe, "our depth lead to the success in B-Division."

Team Captain Ted Conrads '03 and Lucy Horton '05 battled in A-Division. The duo managed many great races, and had to adjust to the strong currents and changing wind conditions. Conrads sailed Monday's windy Races with Taylor Clark '04 and then Jessie Duncan '05. Horton jumped back in for Tuesday's final four races in lighter air. Stanford finished 11th in A-Division.

Hosted by Bayview Yacht Club and the Midwest College Sailing Association, 18 teams represent the 7 districts of the ICSA at this year's North American Championships. All-American honors will be distributed at tonight's awards Banquet. For more race details, photos, and live coverage, check out www.collegesailing.org.
