Women's Varsity Eight Finishes Third at NCAA's

Indianapolis, Ind. - The final day of the 2003 NCAA Rowing Championships came to an end with Harvard coming away with the Division I team championship and the Varsity Eight title. In Division II, the University of California at Davis was crowned as the 2003 team champions for the second-consecutive year. UC-Davis was also the Varsity Eight victors.

The first title to be awarded was the Division II championship. With a dominating performance, the University of California-Davis won both the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four events and earned the maximum amount of points, 20. In the First Varsity Eight, the Aggies defeated Western Washington with a time of 6:51.74, while the Vikings finished with a time of 6:56.60. In the Varsity Four competition, UC-Davis defeated Western Washington one more time by crossing the finish line in 7:47.03 while the Vikings finished with a time of 7:59.43.

Western Washington finished second overall collecting 15 team points, Mercyhurst was third with 10 points and the Florida Institute of Technology tallied five points for a fourth place finish.

The final events of the championship were the Petite and Grand Final Varsity Eight events. Brown University took first in the Petite Finals in a time of 6:20.01. Princeton placed second in 6:23.48 and Ohio State finished just .47 seconds after Princeton in 6:23.95, good enough for a third place finish.

The Grand Finals of the Varsity Eight event was one of the closest races of the day with Harvard claiming the 2003 Varsity Eight title rowing in at a time of 6:26.92. The win gave Harvard 36 points bumping them into first place, capturing the team title, collecting 59 points total. Michigan finished second in the Grand Finals race in a time of 6:28.58 and Stanford rowed in behind the Wolverines at 6:29.54.

The defending champions, Brown University, finished a close second in the team standings with 57 points and the University of Washington, took third with 55 points.

The first event of the day was the Division I Fours Petite and Grand Finals. The University of Washington took first in the Petite Finals clocking a time of 7:38.02. Finishing closely behind Washington was Virginia, 7:39.05, and Michigan State took third in 7:40.01.

Brown University captured the Varsity Four title for the second year running, finishing in 7:18.83. Placing second was the University of California at Berkeley (7:21.43) while Michigan took third (7:24.83).

Brown University captured its second title of the day in the Second Varsity Eights Final. Brown took first in 6:35.03, ahead of Washington who finished in 6:38.57. The University of California at Berkeley placed third in a time of 6:39.67.

In the Petite Finals of the Second Varsity Eights event Virginia was victorious racing in a time of 6:38.28. Taking second was Yale (6:40.05) and third was Michigan (6:40.32).
