San Francisco, Calif. - The Stanford Cardinal took home second place at the California Collegiate Invite, finishing just ahead of Fullerton and Cal Poly, two schools that Stanford recently beat in dual meets. Although no Cardinal wrestler took home a title, five wrestlers placed in the top four of their weight classes. Marcus Glass (157), given a chance to wrestle in Matt Gentry's place, led the tournament with four pins in only five matches. The Cardinal was pleased with the performance considering Coach Steve Buddie left five of the sqad's ten starters at home to prepare for the season's home stretch.
At 125 pounds, Stanford's true freshman Tanner Gardner took home second place. He won his first two meets of the day before taking on Efren Ceballos of Bakersfield in the finals. Only three weeks ago, Gardner fell to Ceballos in a dual match up, and unfortunately Ceballos won again in the final, 13-7. Gardner can take solace in the fact that Ceballos is ranked seventh in the nation and won honors as the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament.
Imad Kharbush (174) also took home second place at the tournament. He won his first two matches with pins, and then beat O.T. Johnson of Lassen to reach the final. In a narrow match, Leonel Sanchez of Fullerton defeated Kharbush by a score of 7-6. At 157 pounds, Marcus Glass got the start instead of Matt Gentry, who is preparing to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic on Monday. Glass took full advantage of his chance, wrestling to third place with a tournament-leading four pins. He lost his first match against thirteenth ranked Brian Cobb of Bakersfield, but pinned three straight opponents to reach the consolation final, where he defeated San Francisco's Scott Oda by, fittingly, a fall at 2:50.
Stanford's other place winners were John Garfinkel (184) and Shawn Ritzenthaler (285). Garfinkel won his first two matches before falling to the consolation bracket. The loss didn't stop him, however, as he reached the consolation final where he pinned Scott O'Rear of Bakersfield to take home third place. Ritzenthaler, who has been wrestling very well lately, lost his first match, but came back with four straight wins to take third place. He defeated Bakerfield's Eric Parker 7-2 to win the consolation final.
Stanford next wrestles against against Oregon State in a Pac-10 dual. The meet will be held at Burnham Pavilion on Saturday, February 7th at 1:00 pm.
