Stanford, Calif. - The No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide (2-1) scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the No. 12 Stanford Cardinal softball team (1-1), 2-1, this afternoon at the Stanford Tournament.
Stanford got on the board first scoring an unearned run in the top of the second. Meghan Sickler reached base on an error by the shortstop and stole second. Heather Shook reached first on an error by the third baseman which scored Sickler.
The Cardinal held Alabama scoreless until they tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. The Crimson Tide would score in the bottom of the eighth to win the game.
Sophomore Catalina Morris led the Cardinal going 2-for-4 at the plate. Second baseman Meghan Sickler went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Senior Dana Sorensen (1-1) took the loss for Stanford, surrending one earned run on three hits with nine strikeouts.
Stephanie VanBrakle picked up the win for Alabama pitching eight innings, allowing only one unearned run and six hits while striking out seven.
