No. 6 Stanford Shuts Out San Jose State 8-0

Stanford, Calif. - Designated player Michelle Thiry went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the 12th-ranked Stanford softball team shut out San Jose State, 8-0, this afternoon at the Stanford Tournament. The Cardinal improve to 2-1 on the year.

Stanford got things started in the top of the first as lead-off hitter Jackie Rinehart opened with an infield single then stole second. Rinehart scored on a triple by Lauren Lappin who scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Jessica Allister.

In the second inning, Rinehart once again notched an infield single and advanced to second after Catalina Morris was hit by a pitch. Lappin doubled to score Rinehart.

Meghan Sickler led off the third inning, reaching base on an error by the shortstop. Michelle Thiry then homered to centerfield for her first round-tripper of the season.

The hits kept coming as Rinehart recorded her third hit of the game to lead off the fourth inning. Morris tripled to right center, scoring Rinehart.

In the top of the seventh, Lappin reached base on an error by the third baseman then scored on a double by Allister. After Allister stole third, Thiry singled to left field to score Allister.

Freshman Jackie Rinehart went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base. Shortstop Lauren Lappin had a 2-for-4 afternoon at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Catcher Jessica Allister added a hit, a run and two RBI to the effort.

Sophomore Laura Severson picked up the win for the Cardinal, pitching four shutout innings, allowing only one hit with four strikeouts. Freshman Danika Dukes picked up her first save, recording three shutout innings while scattering two hits.

San Jose State's Kelli McCollister took the loss for the Spartans, giving up six runs and eight hits over three innings. Leftfielder Elisa Barrios went 1-for-2 at the plate.

The Cardinal close out play at the Stanford Tournament with a 11 a.m. game against San Jose State on Sunday.
