Stanford, Calif. - Freshman Jackie Rinehart went 2-for-2 at the plate as the 12th-ranked Stanford softball team defeated San Jose State, 2-0, this afternoon to win the Stanford Tournament. The Cardinal improve to 3-1 on the season while the Spartans fall to 0-6.
Stanford scored both runs in the bottom of the first inning. Lead off batter Rinehart notched an infield single then stole second to get the ball rolling for the Cardinal. Catcher Jessica Allister grounded out to the pitcher in the next at bat but the first baseman threw away the ball in an attempt to catch Lappin who scored on the error.
Freshman pitcher Danika Dukes, making her first collegiate start, came up with the win, allowing only one hit through four innings of work with three strikeouts. Sophomore Laura Severson picked up her first save of the season, pitching three strong innings with four strikeouts.
