No. 3 Stanford Falls to No. 23 Rice, 4-3

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 3 ranked Stanford University men's tennis team suffered its first loss at Taube Tennis Center this season, falling to No. 23 ranked Rice University, 4-3 on Saturday.

The Owls took two of the three doubles contests to win the doubles point. The No. 10 ranked doubles team of sophomore James Pade fell to the No. 3 ranked Rice tandem of Richard Barker and William Barker, 8-1. Senior captain Carter Morris and junior Sam Warburg pulled the Cardinal even with the Owls with an 8-3 win over the team of Tony Haerle and Vuk Rajevac. The team of junior Phil Sheng and senior Joe Kao fell to Rice's Ben Harknett and Robert Searle 8-5 to seal the doubles point for the Owls.

In singles competition, Stanford's Warburg, Corkery, and freshman James Wan each collected wins. Warburg, playing at the No. 1 singles spot for the second time this season, defeated Searle 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Corkery defeated William Barker at the No. 2 singles slot, while Wan cruised in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, defeating Jason Mok. Wan's record improved to a team-leading 11-2 on the season.

The Cardinal continue its five-game homestand against Cal on Saturday, February 21 at Taube Tennis Center at 1:00 pm (PT).
