No. 3 Stanford Defeats No. 11 Cal, 5-2

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 3 ranked Stanford University men's tennis team concluded play versus No. 11 California on Sunday afternoon, and walked off the court with a 5-2 win over the Bears at Taube Tennis Center on the Stanford campus. With the win, the Cardinal improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Bears slide to 1-4.

Inclement weather turned Saturday's match into a two day affair. With the threat of rain on Saturday, the two teams agreed to play the singles matches first. Sophomore James Pade and freshman James Wan collected straight set victories, on Saturday, before rain suspended play for the day. Pade defeated Tyler Browne, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, while Wan cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Patrick Briaud at the.

On the second day of play, junior Sam Warburg defeated Balazs Veress of Cal at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-5, while senior captain Carter Morris registered a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jake Leivent.

At No. 2 singles, Cal's Wayne Wong collected a 6-2, 7-6 win over KC Corkery, while Daniel Sebescen defeated junior Phil Sheng, 6-0, 7-6 at No. 3 singles.

Stanford captured all three doubles matches to win the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Corkery and Warburg teamed up to defeat Briaud and Veress, 8-4, while Pade and Wan defeated Browne and Sebescen 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Sheng and Morris defeated Cal's John Pettit and Wong, 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

The Cardinal continue their five game homestand with three games next week. Stanford welcomes Utah to The Farm on Feb. 24th, Arizona on the 27th, and Arizona State on the 28th.
