Stanford Scores its Highest Team Score Yet

Feb. 20, 2004

Feb. 20, 2004 - Although they were still one and a half members short, the Stanford Cardinal made a good showing at Berkeley last Friday, scoring their most impressive team score yet this year, 212.3. However, this still wasn't enough to be the Berkeley Bears, who posted an impressive 220.05.

The Stanford men's team is still trying to recover from injuries, illnesses, and recent red-shirts. Due to a stress fracture in his back, Dylan Carney will be out the rest of the season. Also, freshman Peter Derman is trying to rebound from the flu, and Dan Gill is not yet fully recovered from a shoulder injury. Consequently, he only competed four events this weekend. Despite these set backs, the Cardinal is showing great improvements in individual as well as overall team performance.

Some meet highlights include Peter Derman's 9.2 ring score. Peter edged out fellow freshman strong-man Alex Schorsch by only 0.05 of a point. Freshman Brice Rolston and Junior Ambert Yeung had very consistant, solid performances on their respective events, earning nothing less than an 8.6 on their seven total routines. Sean Doolan, one of two sophomores and the only all-arounder on the Stanford team, posted high marks on the floor exercise and vault with a 9.4 and 9.325, respectively, and Dan Gill, in his usually exceptional form, scored nothing less than a 9.3 on his four events.

This was the last time Stanford and Cal will go head to head this year until the MPSF Championships March 19th and 20th in Stanford's Maples Pavilion.

Stanford will host its second-to-last home meet this Saturday, February 28th at 7:00 pm in Burnham Pavilion.
