LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Stanford University men's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 setback versus USC Thursday night in USC's North Gym. With the loss, the No. 7 ranked Cardinal fall to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in MPSF play. USC picks up just its second win of the season and its first win in MPSF play, improving to 2-8 and 1-5, respectively. Game scores for the match were 26-30, 30-26, 21-30, and 26-30.
The Cardinal and the Trojans were tied at 23-23 in the first game before USC rolled off five of the next six points to eventually win 30-26.
The Cardinal responded, in the second game, jumping out to a 16-9 lead and never looked back, winning the game 30-26.
But the night belonged to USC as the Trojans captured game three easily, 30-21, and then sealed the win by taking game four by a score of 30-26.
Redshirt junior Patrick Bomhack posted a career-high 17 kills and 2 aces, while junior outside hitter David Vogel was the only other Cardinal in double figure kills with 13. Redshirt junior setter Kevin Hansen handed out a team-high 47 assists to go along with a game-high tying 10 digs.
USC was led by Blake Tippett who had a game-high 20 kills and 10 digs. Joao Grangeiro added 15 kills (hitting .400) for the Trojans, while teammates Jeff Bailey and Chris McKniff each had 10 kills.
The Cardinal look to bounce back when they travel to Pepperdine on Saturday for a 7:00 pm (PT) match at Firestone Fieldhouse.
