Jan. 24, 2004 - Saturday evening in Berkeley, the Stanford men's gymnastics team had their second meet of the 2003-2004 competitive year. Coming off a win against number four ranked University of Michigan, the sixth ranked Cardinal was in good standing for the beginning of the season. However, with the team's only senior, Dan Gill, away on Senior National Team business and Dylan Carney out with a potential stress fracture in his back, the tiny Cardinal team suffered from a lack of depth against the well-equipped Berkeley.
In collegiate men's gymnastics, a team puts six members on each event with only the top four scores contributing to the team all-around. With only nine competitors, the Stanford team was forced to put only five gymnasts up for floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, and horizontal bar, as well as only four gymnasts for parallel bars.
Even with this grave disadvantage, the Cardinal did have some good individual performances. Sean Doolan scored an impressive 9.5 on the floor exercise, and his co-sophomore, Nate Downs, did equally well on the pommel horse and horizontal bar with scores of 8.95 and 9.025, respectively. Also, first year competitor, junior Ambert Yeung did a good job on floor exercise, pommel horse, and horizontal bar. The final scores for the meet were Stanford: 203.875 and Cal: 216.2.
With the return of Dan and Dylan, the team will have a chance next week to give the California Bears and Air Force everything they've got in Berkeley on Friday, January 30th.
The Stanford men's gymnastics team has their next home meet on Saturday, February 14th at 7 pm in Burnham Pavillion.
