Jan. 30, 2004 - Friday in Berkeley, the Stanford men had a second chance against the golden bears. Unfortunately, the team was still lacking several members, including freshman Dylan Carney and sophomore Sean Doolan. Even with senior captain, Dan Gill, the Cardinal still fell about nine points behind Cal. However, they were able to beat out Air Force by a substational margin.
Starting off on pommel horse with only five competitors, Stanford was already almost 1.5 points behind Cal after the first event. The margin steadily widened for the rest of the meet, but it was hard for the Cardinal to compete with only four competitors on parallel bars and five on floor exercise, pommel horse, and rings.
Some highlights for the team include a great all around performance by Dan Gill. Scoring an amazing 55.85, Dan scored above a 9.2 on every event except still rings. Nate Downs also did well on horizontal bar with a 9.2. Composing most of the line-up, the freshman contingency has been doing a good job in their first season of collegiate gymnastics. Brice Rolston scored an 8.25 on parallel bars and an 8.1 on pommel horse.
The final scores for the meet were 199.8 for Air Force, 207. 3 for Stanford, and 216.625 for Cal. Stanford is still ranked 10th going into Februray.
This coming weekend, Dan Gill and freshman Alex Schorsch will be traveling to Las Vegas to compete for individual honors in the National Winter Cup competition. Dan will be competing on all six events, and Alex will be on the still rings.
The Cardinal Open is the following weekend, Saturday, February 14th. Come to Burnham to cheer on the Stanford men in the second home meet of the season.
