Stanford, Calif. - Sophomore centerfielder Catalina Morris knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Stanford softball team defeated Fresno State, 3-2, in the first game on their doubleheader at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium this evening.
The Cardinal improve to 21-5 on the year while the Bulldogs fall to 25-11.
Stanford got on the board first as Jackie Rinehart opened the first inning with a single down the leftfield line. Rinehart advanced to second on a wild pitch, then came home as Lauren Lappin singled to centerfield.
Fresno State answered in the top of the third as shortstop Christina Clark homered to leftfield to even the score at one a piece.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single up the middle by Mitzi Ing.
Stanford answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth as Lappin led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on the throw. Jessica Allister singled up the middle to score Lappin.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Rinehart reached first on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Katherine Hoffman sacrificed Rinehart to third. Morris then doubled to left centerfield to score Rinehart and give the Cardinal a 3-2 victory.
Dana Sorensen (12-4) picked up the win for Stanford, pitching eight strong innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out a season-high 12 batters. Jamie Southern took the loss for Fresno State, going 7.1 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) with six strikeouts.
Jackie Rinehart went 2-for-4 on the night with two runs scored, while Lauren Lappin had a 2-for-3 effort with one run and one RBI.
