ANN ARBOR, Michigan - Stanford is off to a dynamic start at the 28th annual U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Championships, taking first place in both the solo and duet, and tying for trio in preliminary routines. The 2004 U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Championships kicked off Thursday morning with the solo competition held at the Donald B. Canham Natatorium on the University of Michigan campus.
Katie Norris, of Stanford University (Calif.) took first in the semifinal solo routine with a 93.700, setting her 3.000 ahead of second place holder Sara Petrov, University of Alabama Birmingham. A junior at Stanford, Norris also competed on the 2004 Olympic Team Training Squad.
Ashley McHugh and Katie Norris secured another top ranking for the Cardinals with a slim lead over second place preliminary duet finishers, Kate Hooven and Becky Kim, of The Ohio State University.
Stanford University (Calif.) tied with The Ohio State University for first place in the semifinal trio routine, with Ashley McHugh, Katie Norris, and Samantha Bongiovanni-Ducl earning 93.100 (Stanford), to match that of Buckeyes' trio Kate Hooven, Becky Kim, and Lindsay Newbill.Sarah DuBay, who earned a 71.900 in the solo competition, and a 69.300 in the duet semifinals, when joined by Sarah Van Wesep, leads host, University of Michigan.
More than 250 athletes from 29 universities are competing for collegiate national titles in the solo, duet, trio and team events. The championships are an open-class meet, combining competition for NCAA Divisions I, II and III, plus NAIA schools and clubs. The top eight athletes from today's preliminary rounds will advance to Saturday's finals.
Competition continues at the University of Michigan Aquatic Center on Friday with figures at 8:00 a.m. and team semifinals at 3:00 p.m. Finals in all events begin Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
