Seattle, Wash. - Sophomore outfielder Catalina Morris scored four times and notched two RBI as the eighth-ranked Stanford softball team defeated No. 6 Washington, 12-9, this afternoon in Seattle, Washington. The Cardinal improve to 37-12, 7-4 in the Pac-10 while the Huskies fall to 32-10, 6-3 in league action.
With two outs in the top of the first, Catalina Morris doubled to centerfield. Lauren Lappin was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for the Cardinal. Jessica Allister singled through the left side to score Morris and give Stanford the 1-0 edge on the scoreboard.
Jackie Rinehart led off with a walk in the third inning and moved to second on a ground out by Heather Shook. Morris hit a two-run homerun to rightfield to add two more runs for the Cardinal. Lauren Lappin hit an infield single and moved to second as Allister reached first on an error by the centerfielder. Leah Nelson singled up the middle to score Lappin and put Stanford up 4-0.
With one out on the board in the top of the fourth, Katherine Hoffman hit a bloop single to leftfield and advanced to second with a stolen base. Rinehart singled up the middle to move Hoffman to third then stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Shook. Shook hit an infield fielder's choice to score Hoffman and pick up an RBI.
Washington countered with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a bases loaded walk. The Huskies picked up another run on a solo homerun by Kristen Rivera to close the gap to 5-2.
Elizabeth Bendig led off the sixth inning with a single through the left side (Megan Bordelon entered as a pinch runner), followed by an infield single by Katherine Hoffman. The runners moved up on a ground out by Rinehart. Shook reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second as Bordelon was out at home. Morris walked to load the bases. Lappin hit a fielder's choice to the shortstop to pick up an RBI as Hoffman scored. Allister hit a two-RBI single to leftfield, scoring Rinehart and Shook. Nelson reached on an error by the second baseman as Lappin scored. Meghan Sickler was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bendig, who led off the inning with a singled, hit another single to left as Allister scored to make the score, 10-2.
The Huskies got one back in the bottom of the sixth as Sarah Hyatt hit an RBI single to score Aimee Minor.
With one out in the seventh inning, Shook reached first on an error by the third baseman and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Morris walked then Lappin singled up the middle to score Shook. Nelson singled to rightfield as Morris scored to make the score 12-3 in favor of the Cardinal.
Washington made things interesting by scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh to close the gap to three runs.
Sophomore hurler Laura Severson (13-5) recorded the win for Stanford, going 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs with four strikeouts. Washington's Tia Bollinger (11-4) took the loss for the Huskies, allowing seven runs (three earned) on 13 hits over seven innings of work. Cardinal Dana Sorensen picked up her fifth save of the season.
Lauren Lappin went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI while teammate Jessica Allister had a 2-for-5 effort with three RBI. Leah Nelson also collected three RBI to go with two hits. Elizabeth Bendig and Katherine Hoffman picked up a pair of hits as well.
Washington was led by Aimee Minor's three RBI afternoon and Kristen Rivera's three hits.
The two teams met again tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out the weekend series.
