Brandeis University - Stanford Fencing ends its season with a 10th place at the NCAA Championships. Five athletes qualified to compete at the NCAA Championships. "The Olympic year takes a couple of our top fencers from us!" says co-head coach George Pogosov. 'Steve Gerberman and Iris Zimmermann have taken a year off to train for the Olympics and can't represent Stanford until next year.' The five fencers who qualified may have been few in number but made up for it on the strip. 'These are five of the strongest competitors we have ever had!' says Lisa Milgram co-head coach. 'A top ten finish with only 5 athletes is phenomenal."
The five cardinal athletes were
Robert Owens - men's sabre
Florian Reichling - men's foil
Martin Lee -men's epee
Curtis Andrus- men's sabre
Eva Petchnigg- women's foil
Curtis Andrus, freshman, fought hard and missed an All-American position by one touch finishing 13th. Martin Lee, sophomore also finished 13th missing an All-American position by 1 touch. Eva Petchnigg a graduating senior and former NCAA champion finished 6th earning her a second team All - American title. Robert Owens and Florian Reichling, both graduating seniors finished strong.
Next year new recruit will be arriving at Stanford and the cardinal fencing will take on the strong east coast schools again. Stanford will host the NCAA Western Regionals next March.
