SANTA BARBARA, CA - Women's Water Polo returned to its winning ways on Sunday afternoon with a solid 6-1 defeat of MPSF rival UC Santa Barbara. Senior captain Wendy Watkins scored 2 goals and Scotti Shafer, Hannah Luber, Katie Hansen, and Christina Hewko all scored one each to power the Stanford victory.
Coming off a loss to USC the night before, Stanford used a combination of good goalkeeping, efficient defense, and potent scoring to shut down the Gauchos in their home pool. The Cardinal opened up the match on a tear, taking a 3-0 lead into the half that was fueled by one of Wendy Watkins' goals.
UCSB found the back of the net for the first and only time in the third period, when Jennifer D'Anna tossed one in for the Gauchos to cut Stanford's lead to 2. Stanford would not let up, however, as they answered with three scores to make it a 6-1 final.
With the loss, the Gauchos fell to 11-11 overall and 2-5 in MPSF action.
Stanford returns home this weekend to play a final pair of regular season home MPSF matches. The first match comes against cross-bay archrival California at 7 pm on Friday, April 9 and the second comes April 10 against Pacific at 12 noon.
