STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 9 ranked Stanford University men's volleyball team fell to the No. 4 ranked Pepperdine Waves, 3-0, Friday night at Burnham Pavilion. Game scores for the match were 30-20, 30-28, and 30-27. With the loss, the Cardinal drop to 8-16 on the season and 5-14 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. The Waves improve to 16-7 overall and 12-7 in MPSF play.

The Waves captured the first game by the score of 30-20. The Cardinal jumped out to an early 7-4 lead on a kill by junior middle blocker Craig Buell. Stanford pushed its lead to 10-6 on a kill from sophomore outside hitter Nick Manov. Pepperdine would battle back and grab a 14-13 advantage on a kill from senior Fred Winters. An ace by Sean Rooney pushed Pepperdine's lead to 21-15 and the Waves wouldn't look back from there.

The Cardinal again grabbed an early 9-8 lead in game two, thanks to back-to-back kills by juniors David Vogel and Pat Bomhack. The Waves would then go on a 12-4 run, culminated by consecutive aces by Winters to give them a 20-13 edge. The Cardinal used a quick timeout to regroup. Coming out of the break, Stanford went on a 12-5 run to tie the score at 25-25. After a point by Pepperdine, the Cardinal tied things up at 26-26 on a kill from Buell. Winters gave the Waves a 28-27 advantage on consecutive kills by Winters. An ace by Pepperdine's Hein gave the Waves a two-point cushion at 29-27. The Cardinal would pull within one at 29-28 on a kill by Buell, but the Waves would close out the game on a block by John Mayer.

Game three, much like game two, was tightly contested as a kill by Vogel tied the score at 10-10. The two teams traded the next eight points to bring the score to 14-14. Stanford grabbed a slim 16-14 lead on a kill by Vogel and a block by sophomore middle blocker Chris Ahlfeldt and Hansen. The Waves would tie things at 17-17 on a kill by John Parfitt. The teams traded points with the score settling at 20-20 on a kill by Manov. A service error by Stanford and a kill by Rooney opened up a 22-20 Pepperdine advantage. A kill by Winters gave the Waves a 25-22 lead. A kill by Ahlfeldt cut the Waves lead to 26-24, but Hein responded for the Waves with a kill of his own to give Pepperdine a 27-24 edge. Pepperdine would put the game away at 30-27 on a kill by Rooney to end the match.

Buell paced the Cardinal with 13 kills, while Vogel added nine and Manov and Ahlfeldt chipped in eight and seven kills, respectively. Hansen handed out 39 assists, while Clayton collected a team-high seven digs.

Rooney's game-high 19 kills paced the Waves, while Winters hammered home 15. Hein was the third Wave in double-figure kills with 10, while Mayer registered game-highs of 50 assists and 11 digs.

The Cardinal return to the court tomorrow night when they host the USC Trojans at Burnham Pavilion. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
