LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - Second-seeded Stanford downed UCLA 3-2 on Saturday to advance to the championship game against No. 1-seed USC at the 2004 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Water Polo Tournament.
Both the Cardinal and the Bruins closed the first period without a score. Stanford then jumped to a 2-0 lead at the half, with scores from Wendy Watkins and Nancy El-Sakkary, only to see UCLA tie the contest in the third quarter on goals by Kristina Kunkel (4:13) and Molly Cahill (2:54).
In the final period, Katie Hansen's man-advantage goal with 1:01 left in the game gave Stanford a 3-2 win over UCLA. UCLA had two shots in the final 0:30 of the game, but both missed the net.
