STANFORD, Calif. - Southern Illinois defeated Southern Mississippi, 4-1, this evening in an elimination game at the Stanford NCAA Regional at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. SIU improves to 44-16 on the season while USM ends the year at 33-26.
Southern Illinois picked up two runs in the bottom of the third inning as Katie Jordan doubled to rightcenterfield to bring in Jenny Doehring and Lindsey Bonnell.
Southern Mississippi scored in the top of the fourth on a single by Ashley Davis to pull within one.
But SIU would add two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the win.
Cassidy Scoggins (13-4) picked up the win for SIU, scattering five hits over seven innings with oneunearned run and four strikeouts. Danielle Wymer (9-8) took the loss for USM, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits over 4.0 innings of work.
Lauren Roney went 2-for-3 for the Salukis while Katie Jordan picked up two RBI.
Ashley Davis went 1-for-3 for Southern Miss with the team's lone RBI.
Southern Illinois advances to take on Pacific tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in an elimination game.
