Stanford, Calif. - The sixth-ranked Stanford softball team dropped a 7-1 contest to No. 3 UCLA this afternoon at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal are now 41-15 overall, 11-7 in Pac-10 play while the Bruins are 36-9, 9-8 in league action.
UCLA scored first as leftfielder Ashley Herrera hit a two-run homerun to left in the top of the second inning followed by a solo homer by leadoff hitter Caitlin Benyi.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Third baseman Elizabeth Bendig singled to centerfield then advance on a miscue by the centerfielder. Shoney Hixson entered the game as a pinch runner for Bendig. Second baseman Meghan Sickler drove Bendig home with a single to center to cut the Bruins lead to two.
UCLA scored again in the top of the seventh inning as Benyi hit her second round-tripper of the game - a three-run homer to leftfield. Shortstop Emily Legaspi hit an RBI single to put the Bruins up 7-1.
Senior righthander Dana Sorensen (26-8) took the loss for the Cardinal, allowing seven runs on 10 hits over seven innings of work. Keira Goerl (21-7) picked up the win in the circle for UCLA, scattering three hits over seven innings of work with a run scored.
Meghan Sicker led the team with a 1-for-3 day at the plate with an RBI. Shoney Hixson scored the Cardinal's only run. Catalina Morris and Elizabeth Bendig collected a hit each.
Stanford closes out the regular season next weekend with road games against Oregon and Oregon State.
