STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Danny Putnam hit a home run and drove in five runs in helping Stanford beat Nevada-Las Vegas 10-4 in the opening round of the Stanford Regional on Friday.
Donny Lucy also homered and drove in three runs as the Cardinal (45-12) won for the fifth time in six games.
Eddie Gill doubled twice among his three hits and drove in two runs for the Rebels (37-23), won had their four-game winning streak stopped.
Jeff Gilmore (10-2) pitched a seven-hitter to win his fourth straight decision. He walked two and struck out eight.
Jake Vose (10-4) took the loss after allowing nine runs on 11 hits in 5 2-3 innings. He walked two and did not struck out anyone.
Top-seeded Stanford, in its 11th straight NCAA tournament, will meet No. 2 Long Beach State on Saturday in the winner's bracket of the double elimination tournament.
UNLV, in its second consecutive tournament, meets Saint John's on Saturday in a loser's bracket contest. The Red Storm dropped a 4-3 decision to Long Beach State earlier in the day.
Putnam's 16th homer of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth, highlighted a five-run outburst for the Cardinal. Lucy hit a two-run homer in the inning.
Stanford All-American second baseman Jed Lowrie extended his hitting streak to 11 games with two hits and an RBI. John Mayberry added an RBI single in the eighth.
Andrew D'Angelo and Ryan Ruiz also drove in runs for the Rebels.
UNLV All-American outfielder Eric Neilsen was 0-for-3 with two hit by pitches and two runs scored as his 16-game hitting streak ended.
