2004 NCAA BASEBALL REGIONALS
POSTGAME QUOTES
#1 Stanford vs. #4 UNLV
STANFORD
HEAD COACH MARKMARQUESS
(on the win)
"Obviously, I thought it was a fantastically pitched game by Gilly [sophomore starting pitcher Jeff Gilmore]. Great job, considering the magnitude of the game. I really thought he was in command for most of the evening, I think he had about eight strikeouts, and he walked two, so he was very impressive. I thought we did a real good job of getting some timely hitting, obviously the home runs were huge, the three-run homer by Danny [Putnam] and the two-run shot by Donny [Lucy]. We got a couple of big singles that drove in runs, also, so I thought our hitting was timely. It was just a well-played game. We were very concerned about their power, they've got tremendous power numbers. Gilmore did a great job of keeping the ball in the ballpark and really keeping them off-balance. The bottom line was, it was a superbly pitched game, and we got timely hitting."
JUNIOR LEFTFIELDER DANNYPUTNAM
(on facing lefthanders)
"I don't really mind. I feel a little bit more in the zone, I have to concentrate a little more against lefties, so it doesn't usually bother me too much."
SOPHOMORE PITCHER JEFFGILMORE
(on throwing a complete game)
"I feel very good that I could help the team out. We've got a lot of great arms in the bullpen, and I was doing my best tonight to keep them fresh for the upcoming games. Regionals can be very dangerous to your pitching if you're forced to throw a lot of guys in a lot of games that you might potentially play. There was no question in my mind that I was going to take it to the end and save our bullpen."
UNLV
HEAD COACH BUDDY GOULDSMITH
(on the loss)
"First of all, we played an outstanding team tonight in Stanford. We tried to keep them off-balance. I thought Jake [Vose] did an outstanding job through 4 1/3 [innings], and unfortunately we got in a position where we had to get some balls in there in 3-2 counts, and like a good team does they took advantage. Hats off to them, they played an outstanding ballgame. I thought our guys played hard, we came out ready to play, we wanted to shake things up with that first pitch of the game, our leadoff hitter doesn't normally swing at the first pitch of the game. Our guys played hard, and they'll come back and be ready to play tomorrow."
"We knew we had to come in and make pitches, and keep swinging the bats like we had all year. I thought we swung the bats good. The bottom of the fifth there really caught up with us."
(on Danny Putnam's 3-run homer in the 5th)
"Every mistake's going to be magnified against a good team. We wanted to force him to go the other way, and we just left it up there a little bit."
(on who will start in Saturday's elimination game vs. St. John's)
"David Seccombe will start the first game tomorrow."
SENIOR PITCHER JAKE VOSE
(on Danny Putnam's 3-run homer in the 5th)
"I hung one of those changeups, and he hit it pretty far. I was pitching alright until the end, and then they killed me."
JUNIOR OUTFIELDER ERIC NIELSEN
(on his frustrating night at the plate)
"Unfortunately I got hit twice, but that's the game of baseball. I was seeing the ball well tonight, but I couldn't find the holes...but that's the thing about baseball, we'll come back tomorrow and spike it up again."
"Anytime I don't get a hit, I feel like I let the team down, but I got on base twice and scored both times.
(on Stanford winning pitcher Jeff Gilmore)
"He was changing speeds, throwing breaking balls for strikes. He did a great job and kept us off balance. Hats off to him."
SENIOR FIRST BASEMAN EDDIE GILL
(on scoring first)
"In a big game like this, it's important to score first and take the pressure off. It was huge for us, it relaxed us and we started to roll."
