Stanford, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team hit a season-high .406 as they defeated San Francisco, 3-0, this evening in Burnham Pavilion at the Stanford Invitational. Game scores were 30-27, 30-13, 30-11. The Cardinal improve to 4-2 on the year while the Dons fall to 3-6.
Game one remained close between the two teams until USF open up a four-point lead at 16-12, forcing a Stanford timeout. The Dons continued to lead but called a timeout when the Cardinal closed the gap to 23-26 on back-to-back hitting errors. Stanford got kills from Lizzie Suiter and Ogonna Nnamani to pull within one at 26-27 as USF took their final timeout. Setter Bryn Kehoe tied the game at 27-all with a service ace and Stanford took the lead on a Dons setting error. A kill by O. Nnamani put the Cardinal at game point 29-27. Stanford won 30-27 on a hitting error by USF to complete the comeback.
The Cardinal jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after back-to-back kills by Jennifer Hucke and Lizzie Suiter. Stanford ran the lead to 10-2 on a back row kill by Ogonna Nnamani. A service ace by Leahi Hall put the Cardinal up 16-6 as USF took their final timeout. Stanford continued to roll going up 28-11 on back-to-back service aces by Jennifer Hucke. The Cardinal reached game point on a kill by Kristin Richards and closed out game two with a kill by Franci Girard at 30-13.
Game three began with Stanford taking a 6-2 lead after a block by Franci Girard and Jennifer Hucke. The Dons took their first timeout trailing 2-8 on a kill by Kristin Richards. The Cardinal built a 14-5 lead to force a final USF timeout after a Dons hitting error. Stanford took the 23-8 lead on a kill by Ogonna Nnamani, after scoring six consecutive points. A kill by Hucke got the Cardinal to match point at 29-10. Jennifer Wilson picked up a kill on a quick set to end the game, 30-11.
Sophomore outside hitter Kristin Richards led the match with 16 kills, followed by senior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani's 14 kills. Jennifer Hucke added 10 kills while setter Bryn Kehoe picked up a match-high 10 digs. Middle blocker Lizzie Suiter notched a match-high four blocks for the Cardinal.
USF was led by Stephanie Voelckers' eight kills and nine digs. KeLicia Shorts led the team with four blocks on the evening.
Penn State takes on Eastern Washington in the 7 p.m. game to close out the tournament.
