Dallas, TX - The Stanford Cardinal played No. 17 ranked Tulsa to a 0-0 tie in the opening game of the Mi Cochina Classic, hosted by SMU. Sophomore Andrew Kartunen earned the start in goal, keeping a clean sheet through 110 minutes as Stanford's record moved to 0-0-1. The Cardinal take on the host Mustangs on Sunday at Westcott Field.
The first period was controlled by the Tulsa attack, as the Golden Hurricane pelted the Stanford goal with 10 shots. The Cardinal rebounded in the second half, registering eight shots on goal but failed to find the back of the net. Tulsa out-shot the Cardinal for the match by a 17-13 margin. The defensive struggle was highlighted by 24 fouls committed by each squad.
Sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen collected five saves in net, leading a Stanford defense that kept a potent Tulsa attack off of the scoreboard. It is Kartunen's first shutout since he helped hold SMU scoreless last September.
Junior forward K.C. Coyne paced the Stanford offense, registering five shot attempts with three of them coming on goal. Senior Todd Leber entered the contest as a sub and provided the Cardinal with an offensive spark with three shots of his own. Sophomore Bret Shimizu, Junior Seyi Abolaji, and Seniors Darren Fernandez, James Twellman, and Aaron Maines each recorded shot attempts.
Stanford returns to the pitch on Sunday evening to face the No. 11 ranked host Mustangs at 7:30 pm, CT. The Cardinal hold a slim 2-1-1 advantage in the all-time series between the two programs.
