Dallas, TX - Goals from Darren Fernandez and Evan Morgan propelled the men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over No. 11 ranked SMU at Westcott Field on Sunday evening. With the win, the Cardinal claimed the Mi Cocina Classic title and improve to 1-0-1 on the season, while the Mustangs drop to 1-1.
The Cardinal defense held strong for the second straight game, turning away several SMU attacks in the first period. The Stanford offense began clicking in the second half, as senior Darren Fernandez drove home a cross from Galen Thompson to put the Cardinal ahead at the 54:56 mark. Freshman Evan Morgan came on as a sub and tallied his first collegiate goal in the 80th minute, heading in a corner kick from tournament MVP James Twellman.
Sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen posted his second straight shutout, having held No. 19 Tulsa scoreless in Friday's contest. Kartunen made six saves in the net against a potent SMU attack, and recorded his third career shutout. Two of Kartunen's three career clean sheets have come against the Mustangs.
Five Stanford players were named to the Mi Cocina Classic All-Tournament Team, including the tournament MVP Twellman. Kartunen, Fernandez, Michael Brown, and Cooper McKee all earned All-Tournament accolades.
The Cardinal return to Maloney Field on Friday to host San Jose State at 7:00pm in the first game of the Cal-Adidas Tournament. Stanford will meet San Diego on Sunday in Berkeley to close out the weekend action.
