Stanford, Ca - Tony Azevedo scored five goals to lead the top-ranked Stanford men's water polo team to a convincing 15-4 victory over #12 Pacific in a non-league game on Friday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center.
Azevedo scored three of his goals in the first period as the Cardinal jumped to an 8-2 first period lead. Greg Crum, who was named MPSF Player of the Week for his six goals in wins over USC and Pacific last week, added three goals including Stanford's first goal of the game at 6:10 of the first period.
Peter Varellas added a pair of goals for Stanford which upped its season record to 8-1. Chris Kelsch scored two goals for Princeton which fell to 10-2.
Stanford opens play on Saturday at the NorCal Tournament at Pacific with a 10:30 a.m. game against either Pacific or Cal Baptist. If Stanford wins, they will play again on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. against UC San Diego or St. Francis (NY).
Stanford will have two more games on Sunday. The championship game is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Thomas Hopkins continues to lead the Cardinal attack with 24 goals. Crum has scored 20 goals while Varellas is next with 19. Azevedo, the three-time National Player of the Week and two-time U.S. Olympian, has scored 17 goals.
