Stanford, Ca - Peter Varellas scored four goals to lead the second-ranked Stanford men's water polo team to a 10-5 victory over eighth-ranked UC Irvine on Saturday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at the Avery Aquatic Center.
Stanford's defense also played a prominent role in the game, holding the Anteaters scoreless until 2:03 of the third period.
The Cardinal jumped to a 1-0 first period lead, and added four more goals (two by Tony Azevedo) in the second period to take a 5-0 halftime lead.
Thomas Hopkins scored a goal and Varellas added two goals to give the Cardinal an 8-0 lead before the Anteaters scored their first goal by Rick Merlo. Merlo scored four of UCI's five goals.
Azevedo and Hopkins each scored two goals as Stanford upped its season record to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF. UCI fell to 8-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Stanford travels to UC Davis on Sunday (noon).
