DAVIS, Calif. -- Tony Azevedo scored five goals and Thomas Hopkins added three more as No.2 ranked Stanford jumped out early and never let up in a 16-8 victory over No.14 UC Davis in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon at the Schaal Aquatics Center.
With the victory, Stanford improves to 13-2 while the Aggies fell to 12-10.
Azevedo scored the first two goals of the game as Stanford took advantage on an early Aggie kickout in the opening minutes. Sam Tyre added another score before UCD's Adam Lindsay put the Aggies on the board with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period. David Welch cut the Cardinal lead to 3-2 before Stanford closed out the period with goals from Hopkins and Greg Crum for a 5-2 lead.
UCD's Patrick Jacobson opened the second period with a goal to cut the lead to 5-3, but Azevedo countered less than a minute later to push the lead back to three. Michael Long's penalty shot with 2:09 remaining in the half cut the lead to three at 8-5, but UC Davis didn't get any closer as Tyre scored just before the buzzer to made it a 9-5 Stanford lead at halftime.
Azevedo scored two more in the third period as the Cardinal opened up a five-goal lead by the end of the quarter. The lead was stretched to nine late in the fourth before Tom Jay's goal at the buzzer made the final score 16-8.
