Top-Ranked Stanford Scores Two Wins At NorCal Tournament

Stockton, Ca - The top-ranked Stanford men's water polo team notched two wins on Saturday during first day action at the NorCal Tournament at Pacific.

In its first game of the day, Stanford defeated Pacific, 16-6, as Thomas Hopkins scored four goals, Peter Varellas added three scores and Tony Azevedo chipped in with two. The Cardinal jumped to a 4-0 first period lead, and extended it to 9-1 at halftime.

Nine different Stanford players scored at least one goal.

Later in the day, Stanford dropped UC San Diego, 14-8. Azevedo, the three-time National Player of the Year and two-time U.S. Olympian, scored three goals while Varellas added three scores. Stanford led 5-2 at the end of the first period, and added four goals in the second period for a 9-1 halftime lead.

Stanford, 10-1, moves into Sunday's semifinals with an 11:40 a.m. matchup against fourth-ranked California. The Golden Bears scored a 12-5 victory over UC Davis and an 8-4 decision over Loyola Marymount.

If Stanford wins, they would move into the championship game (5:30 p.m.) against either second-ranked USC or third-ranked UCLA.
