Stanford, Calif. - Stanford came from behind to score two goals in the second half and earn a 2-2 tie with California in the Pac-10 opener for both squads at Maloney Field on Friday evening. The Cardinal moves to 5-1-3 on the season, while the Golden Bears remain undefeated with a record of 7-0-2. With the tie, both Stanford and Cal earn 2.5 points towards the Lexus Gauntlet competition.
The Golden Bears had an early chance to score, as a Carl Acosta shot hit the crossbar at the 33:17 mark. California got on the board first when Stanford goalkeeper Robby Fulton was shown a yellow card for handling the ball outside of the penalty box, and the Bears were awarded a free kick. Nick Hatzke struck a curling shot that beat the outstretched hands of Fulton and sailed into the top left corner of the net. The Bears tallied again in the 40th minute, as an Angel Quintero corner kick bounced off a Cardinal defender and into the Stanford net.
The Cardinal attack came on strong in the second half, but the California defense thwarted numerous Stanford attempts. With 20 minutes left in the contest, freshman Dan Shapiro dribbled the ball into the Cal box and passed to junior Cooper McKee who's shot was saved by a diving Eric Kronberg. The Stanford attack broke through in the 72nd minute when sophomore Bret Shimizu was fouled inside the box and a penalty kick was awarded to the Cardinal. Senior Matt Janusz calmly converted the chance from the spot, cutting Cal's lead to a single goal.
Stanford continued to pressure the Golden Bear goal, and evened the score with just 1:23 left in regulation. Shimizu brought the ball into the box and found junior Seyi Abolaji with a pass, who then crossed the ball in front of the Cal goal. The ball was re-directed by the Bear goalkeeper, and senior Darren Fernandez was able to score with a header to equalize. Stanford out-shot Cal by a 5-1 margin in the second period.
California had a chance to spoil the Cardinal come back in the first overtime period, but a Tyson Wahl free kick from 20 yards out sailed high of the Stanford goal. Cal out-shot the Cardinal 7-1 in the two overtime periods.
Fulton collected six saves in net for the Cardinal, while Kronberg made four for Cal. Acosta and Calen Carr each attempted a team-high three shots, while Fernandez led the Cardinal with three shot attempts. Stanford narrowly out-shot the Bears for the match by a 12-11 margin.
Stanford continues Pac-10 conference play next weekend, as the Cardinal hit the road to take on Oregon State on Friday and Washington on Sunday.
