Malibu, Ca. - The second-ranked Stanford men's water polo team spotted eighth-ranked Pepperdine a 1-0 lead early in the first period, but then the Cardinal took control enroute to a 12-3 victory over the Waves on Saturday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game.
Down by a goal early, Stanford took a 3-1 lead after the first period, and extended it to 6-2 at halftime. The Cardinal then led by six goals, 8-2, after three periods. Pepperdine scored to make it 8-3 in the fourth period, but Stanford then scored four straight goals.
Tony Azevedo and Peter Varellas each scored three goals while Tyler Drake added a pair of scores.
The victory upped Stanford's season record to 14-2 and 3-0 in the MPSF. Pepperdine fell to 9-9 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Stanford travels to seventh-ranked UC San Diego Sunday (noon).
