Stockton, Ca - Third-ranked UCLA stunned top-ranked Stanford, 8-7, in double overtime in the championship game on Sunday at the NorCal Tournament.
Thomas Hopkins scored three goals while Peter Varellas added a pair of goals, but the Bruins, ranked third in the nation, prevailed over the top-ranked Cardinal. Brett Ormsby scored three goals for UCLA.
The Bruins jumped to a 3-1 lead after one period, but Stanford tied the game at 4-4 at halftime, thanks to three goals by Thomas Hopkins, Tony Azevedo and Tyler Drake.
Each team scored four times in the second time to send the game into overtime. Varellas sent Stanford into the lead at 1:48 of the first overtime, but with 26 seconds left, Ormsby tied the game. The only score of the second overtime was the Bruin game winner, a Matt Jacobs score with 1:57 left.
The Bruins gained entrance into the championship match with an 8-6 upset over second-ranked and defending NCAA champion USC.
Stanford reached the championship game earlier in the day with a 12-7 victory over fourth-ranked California, 12-7. Tony Azevedo scored four goals while Greg Crum added a trio of scores and Matt Moser added a pair. The Cardinal jumped to a 3-2 first period lead, and extended it throughout the game, leading 8-4 at halftime, and 10-5 after three periods.
The loss to UCLA dropped Stanford's record to 11-2 on the year. Stanford hosts UC Irvine, Oct. 16, at noon.
