Matt Gentry Wins at California Open, Four Other Cardinal Place

Nov. 22, 2004

Fullerton, Calif. - Amidst a strong showing by Stanford wrestlers, Matt Gentry proved once again why he is a national champion. Gentry pinned two opponents en route to the California Open title at 157 pounds, while four of his teammates finished in the top four of their weight classes. Joining Gentry on the podium were: Tanner Gardner who took 2nd place at 125 pounds; Rafael Chavez who took 3rd at 133; Josh Zupancic who took 4th at 149; and Imad Kharbush who took 3rd at 174.

Gentry won five matches on the day, pinning Cruz Zabas of Santa Ana and Angelo Lago of the hometown Fullerton Titans. This was Gentry's sixth tournament title over the past two seasons, and his first of the 2004-05 campaign.

At 125 pounds, Tanner Gardner took second place while wrestling unattached from Stanford University. Gardner won three matches with two falls before he lost in the finals to Jeremy Mendoza of Arizona State in a 7-5 decision. True freshman Rafael Chavez, the three-time state champion of Wyoming, took 3rd place at 133 pounds. He won five matches on the day, including a 5-0 consolation-final victory over Paul Tice of the Titans.

Josh Zupancic, another freshman, went 4-2 on the day, taking 4th place at 149 pounds. He fell to Tylor Moran of Embry-Riddle in the consolation-final. At 174 pounds, Imad Kharbush won five matches to take third place. He recorded two falls and a major decision before defeating Britton Mooney of Bakersfield in a 7-2 decision in the consolation-final.

Coach Buddie must be pleased with the team's showing, with two freshman taking places at the tournament. While a long season and lots of work lay ahead for the Cardinal, this team appears to have a strong foundation in place. To catch the Cardinal in action, join Coach Buddie and the team for their first home dual of the season on Tuesday, November 23rd. The Cardinal will face the San Francisco State Gators at Burnham Pavilion at 7:00 pm.

Notes: No team points were tallied in this open tournament ... Stanford took 21 wrestlers to the tournament ... Stanford's next tournament is in Reno on December 19 at the Tournament of Champions.
